Happy Returns

Getting back into work after some time out takes a bit of planning, says Georgiana Head
As the tax market picks up, we are beginning to see candidates who have been out of work for some time being able to come back. These individuals range from mothers who have taken extended maternity leave to newlyqualified CTAs who have taken a career break to go travelling, or tax professionals who have been made redundant in the recession and who have found it difficult to find a new role because of the poor economic climate.

Whatever the reason for their sabbatical from tax, these individuals all face the same problem: how do they persuade an employer that their skill set is still relevant and that they can get back up to speed with tax quickly?

Stars in her eyes

Georgiana Head gets a mention in Accountancy Magazine, December 2010:

Here on Accountancy we’ve often lamented how little accountants feature in films, compared to their legal counterparts. Specialist taxation recruiter Georgiana Head is about to address that imbalance – in a way. She has just spent two days on the film set of Karla Films’ Tinker,Tailor, Soldier Spy. Four years ago, she explains, she bid for two walk-on parts in a Working Titles Film at a charity auction raising funds for St Martin’s House hospice.

‘I got a real insight into just what goes into making a film,’ she says, and ‘was on set with Gary Oldman, John Hurt and the author John Le Carré’ (also appearing as an extra). She also rubbed up against some of the other stars, including Colin Firth, Kathy Burke, Toby Jones and Benedict Cumberbatch. ‘It was a fascinating experience,’ she adds. ‘It will be interesting to see if my role makes the final cut, but the 1970s beehive hairstyle makes me pretty unrecognisable!’

Indeed there are real attractions to working inhouse, and when vacancies in industry arise they tend to attract far more candidates than positions at similar levels in practice. So why are tax folk drawn to commerce – why does it appeal?
