Manchester: a boom town that’s a hub for northern corporate tax
Georgiana Head explores a regenerated city that seems to have been on an inexorable rise since the 2002 Commonwealth Games demonstrated its ability to compete successfully on an international level
While the North West’s wealth was built on its industrial manufacturing past, Manchester is now a centre for retail, financial services and of course sports and leisure. The city centre is unrecognisable from even 10 years ago, with deluxe stores such as Selfridge’s and modern architectural complexes like Urbis. The gentrification of this Victorian city has spread to areas such as the Lowry complex at Salford Quays or the American-style shopping experience at the Trafford Centre.
